Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Own For 2014

PepsiCo (PEP) vs. Coca-Cola (KO) is usually all we hear about when it comes to PepsiCo. However, PepsiCo owns and operates a large variety of snack food brands in addition to its beverage brands. So rather than comparing it to other beverage companies, how about we compare it to another snack food company?

Mondelez International, Inc. (MDLZ) the snack food spin-off of Kraft Foods (KRFT) is a more suitable comparison. Coca-Cola is a beverage company but PepsiCo and Mondelez are both beverage and snack food companies.

At first glance we see that PepsiCo is over twice as big as Mondelez and pays a considerably higher dividend. Simply because a company is larger does not make it a better investment. A quick valuation is running the Graham Number for both companies. If you are not aware, we can easily calculate it by punching in the numbers of the companies into this equation.

While this represents a high payout ratio, most companies in the telecommunications sector are known to pay a large portion of their cash to shareholders as dividends, in a bid to increase shareholder value.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By JON C. OGG]

Altria Group, Inc. (NYSE: MO) recently closed at $25.89 and analysts have a consensus price target objective of $27.86.  It carries a 5.9% dividend yield and the stock is down 7.9% from its 52-week high. The price to book value is almost shockingly high at 11 but its return on equity is over 70%.  S&P may only have a “BBB” local long-term credit rating here, but the domestic tobacco leader has been a significant winner and it carries no currency risks to speak of.  Each generation that has tried to bet against the viability of the tobacco sector has failed to win.  B esides, both Boehner and Obama can’t really attack tobacco companies too harshly as they are both smokers.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Altria (MO) is dying, but that shouldn’t stop you from buying it. The $73 billion company is one of the biggest tobacco names in the world, with brands such as Marlboro under its belt. The problem is that Altria only represents the U.S. business of legacy tobacco giant Philip Morris (Philip Morris International (PMI) is the non-U.S. side of the business). With tobacco sales slowly declining here at home, selling cigarettes isn’t exactly a growth opportunity.

But the key word there is that the declines are slow, and as long as that remains the case, Altria will remain a cash cow that throws off a huge dividend payout — a 4.82% yield right now. In the meantime, Altria has been expanding its portfolio in the "sin stock" world, expanding its exposure to alcohol with a 27% stake in SABMiller (SBMRY) and a wholly owned winemaker in Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. That’s a big departure from the firm’s former ownership of Kraft Foods (KRFT), but it’s one that makes a whole lot more sense in my view.

Regulations continue to put a very tight leash on cigarette makers’ marketing efforts, and on new product offerings. But all of those challenges are already priced into shares. Customer stickiness is extremely high in the tobacco business, and that helps offset some of the marketing hurdles that Altria’s faced with. As the firm continues to diversify outside of tobacco, it should stay relevant to investors. Until then, its dividend makes it worth buying for income.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Even Verizon’s ample dividend looks tepid compared with the 5.1% payout over at tobacco and alcohol firm Altria Group (MO). Altria is the biggest tobacco company in the U.S., led by its flagship Marlboro brand. Its other businesses include cigars and smokeless tobacco, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and a massive stake in SABMiller (SBMRY). In short, Altria is a textbook “sin stock” — and that’s proven heavenly for shareholders in the wake of the Great Recession.

Altria’s business is stable, it’s predictable, and it’s massive. But that’s not going to last for long. The fact is, the firm’s business is slowly dying as demand for tobacco products continues to decline in the U.S. While international sales continue to show growth, especially in emerging markets, MO long ago spun its overseas business into Phillip Morris International (PM). But with a gradual decline in cigarette sales already priced into shares, MO’s substantial cash flows and increasing exposure to the beverage business provide some shareholder consolation.

Altria’s SABMiller stake, for instance, adds up to around $7 per share for MO, providing reduced risk for a material chunk of the firm’s balance sheet. After all, the alcoholic beverage business remains hot right now. Investors should continue to expect Altria to payout the majority of its cash flows to investors for the foreseeable future. That makes a hike to its 44-cent dividend look likely in the next quarter.

Its fleet consists of 11 drybulk vessels with a total carrying capacity of 747,994 dwt. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Voula, Greece.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 name shipping player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Paragon Shipping (PRGN), which is engaged in transporting drybulk cargoes, including such commodities as iron ore, coal, grain and other materials along shipping routes worldwide. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 114%.

If you take a look at the chart for Paragon Shipping, you’ll notice that this stock just recently took out its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share with strong upside volume. Shares of PRGN are showing relative strength today, despite the overall market weakness, which shows this stock is in strong demand at current levels. This move is now starting to push shares of PRGN within range of triggering a big breakout trade

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PRGN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.90 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 25,811 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRGN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share. If that level gets taken out with volume, then PRGN could easily tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $7 to $8.35 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRGN off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share, or below its 200-day moving average at $3.74 a share. One can also buy PRGN off strength once it clears $4.90 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point. I would add to either position once PRGN takes out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share with strong upside volume flows.
